Catholic Secondary School Marl
On March 23rd and 24th, 2022, Mr. Patora, an employee of the NRW Construction Industry Association, visited the Marl Catholic Secondary School with the “BauBusBasic” project. As part of the career orientation, skilled trades in the construction industry were presented at various hands-on stations.
A total of 72 students from grades 7-10 and the language support group 2 were able to get active in groups of 12 for 1.5 hours each and put their manual and mathematical skills to the test.
A completely converted construction bus was supposed to come to the Catholic secondary school. Due to Corona, however, the actual "construction bus" was converted into a "build your own thing" trailer, which visited us with an adapted program for career orientation in construction professions.
The course began with a 20-minute lecture on construction professions. The students were given interesting insights into various training courses and their entry requirements in the form of short videos.
The students were shown a platform on the homepage www.bau-dein-ding.de that is helpful in finding internship and training companies in the construction industry. At the end of the lecture, Mr. Patora answered the students' individual questions in detail.
At the hands-on stations, the young people were able to solve tricky tasks in small teams. For example, they had to build a table-sized Leonardo bridge out of several wooden sticks and put together a wooden magnet puzzle in the shape of a house.
Mathematics is an important component for successful work and training in construction professions. The students therefore also had to face this challenge. One task involved calculating areas and determining the volume of the construction box that had been set up.
The latter provided an entertaining experience, especially at the end of the project period.
The students were allowed to enter the construction box one by one and experience a virtual bungee jump. As a surprise, there was a hydraulic seat in the box that suddenly went down, giving them the feeling of falling. To the amusement of the classmates, the video was also broadcast outside on a screen.
With one or two adrenaline rushes and a broad grin, the students left the project and were grateful for the positive impressions they had gained about the construction professions.
On behalf of the Catholic Secondary School, we would like to thank Mr. Patora and the NRW Construction Industry Association for this great project.
